2016 Adventure Recap

2016 Adventure Recap

27.12.16

As we approach the new year I wanted to put together a post on some of my favourite travel moments from 2016. I've seen loads of posts on Instagram of people's 'Best 9' so this is kind of like that but in blog post form. It's nice to look back and reflect on travels over the year. We've done a lot of traveling this year, it always makes me feel proud to tick some more places off our bucket list...

London

We traveled to London this year for Secret Cinema, (If you don't know what Secret Cinema is find out here). We had wanted to do it for years and finally there was one we could make, we both love film and one of our favorite genres is horror, especially zombies! So when we seen there were tickets to see '28 Days Later' we booked up straight away. Basically it was dress up, role play and sets combined along with a rave and a hospital set up at the end where you watch the film. Definitely one of the best things I've done in relation to film.

Almeria

I love visiting Almeria in particular as it's to visit my auntie, I'm really close to her and it just so happens she lives in such a beautiful place. This was my third visit this year. It's really stripped back and set in the mountains so ideal for relaxing. Looking forward to more visits there in 2017. See my previous posts on Almeria here.

Prague

We visited Prague in May of this year; we booked to go to Prague on a whim as we wanted tickets to see Hans Zimmer and the only place tickets weren't sold out was Prague, everyone had said it was lovely so we thought why not kill two birds with one stone and go. We loved it, it's a place I would love to revisit, I did a massive post on it here. Seeing Hans was definitely the highlight; when he played this song I cried. See full post here.

Venice

My grandma and grandad used to visit Italy regularly and always said how beautiful it was; they definitely weren't wrong, Venice was one of the most romantic cities I've ever visited. See full post here.

Florence

On our Italy trip we also visited Florence after Venice, it was only a short flight away; lots of gelato and pasta was consumed. Much like Venice, very beautiful.  See full post here.

Murano & Burano

Whilst in Italy we visited Murano & Burano; two islands just off venice; Burano was definitely the most colorful place I've visited to date, most of the people that live there are fishermen. It felt like going back in time. See full post here.

Majorca

This year we went away with our friends Steph and David, it was lovely to have a couples holiday. We had such a laugh, drank way too much and had some of the best times to date. Definitely need another holiday with them in 2017. See full Post here.

Reykjavik

In November just gone you may have seen that Luke and I visited Iceland, we'd always wanted to go and seeing as it was our ten year anniversary and Luke's birthday it seemed appropriate to go somewhere special. I took some of my favourite photographs to date and managed to tick seeing and photographing the Northern Lights off my bucket list. See full post here.

Edinburgh

Just before Christmas we took a little trip up to Edinburgh, mainly to visit the Christmas markets and do some last minute christmas shopping. Way too many mince pies and cocktails consumed. See post here

I'm looking forward to traveling more next year as we already have some plans in the pipeline! I think traveling is so important and as they say it's 'the only thing you buy that makes you richer'. As cheesy as it sounds I really do feel every year the places we visit shape me as a person.

In the new year I also want to make it my mission to take at least one photograph per day. My camera has built in WiFi so there's no excuse, it makes it so easy to send to my phone or laptop anytime. I also purchased a new hard drive and plan on creating a 365 daily album to look back on next year. Reflecting back on each year past I always wish I'd documented more, this blog definitely allows me to do that but I would like a place to capture the more personal moments too.

Let me know your best moments of 2016 in the comments...

A Festive Trip

A Festive Trip

26.12.16

Just before Christmas Luke and I spent a few nights in Edinburgh, i've sat on the sofa for the majority of today having a look at some of the pictures I took with a Baileys so thought I'd share a few on here, I took my new camera lens too so I wanted to give it a good go (there's quite a lot of photos). It's getting to be a Christmas tradition now that we visit Edinburgh every year, being so close to Newcastle it's really easy to drive to as it's only a few hours away. We made some Spotify Christmas playlists which made the drive an adventure in itself. One of the main reasons we wanted to go up was to visit the Christmas markets which come over from Germany; great food, gifts and mulled wine. I think the markets are there until mid/end of Jan so if you live close by and haven't been yet they're definitely worth a visit. Edinburgh also have Anthropologie and Oliver Bonas which we don't have in Newcastle so I love to visit them when we're there. We did lots of last minute Christmas shopping and enjoyed the festive atmosphere. We didnt get back till Christmas Eve so it feels as if its been a busy weekend. Christmas Day was lovely being spent with the family. I hope you all had a lovely one too!

Merry Christmas!

Interior Update + Giveaway

If you're a long time reader you might have seen on my blog a few times now I've worked with Desenio   they sell Scandinavian and Nordic art prints; they're a brand I love working with as not only do I love what they create I really love their branding and overall aesthetic, very up my alley (as you know anything Scandi I'm all over it). They sell anything from photography to typography and everything in between, there's definitely something for every interior. I've even got my parents a few prints for their hallway for Christmas, they also come in great as gift ideas for birthdays or house warmings.

I had been wanting to update the artwork in our room for a while now and what better time to do it than Christmas? Nice and fresh for going into the new year. Interior overhauls always seem to happen around this time of year for me, I feel like as the year comes to a close I like a change.

I chose a selection of
posters to create a key feature above my desk and also two large mountain prints for above the bed. I kept it minimal with the prints and colours, I didn't want anything too overpowering. I think it's made the room feel much more spacious, bright and airy. I love the new look.
There's two prints up for grabs in my giveaway below, just a small thank you for being a reader of www.emmagriffy.com

With 2017 around the corner I've started to look for my next planner. I love Planners and Diaries, not only for keeping organised but I think they're lovely to look back on years later. I always keep my past diary's and even family members diary'. When my grandma moved house I found a few of her old diaries; it was fascinating looking back at her day to day life, even if it was just 'get hair done at Audrey's at 2:00pm' or 'popping to mams for lunch' Its lovely to look back on what you did in your day to day. I like something with a notes section, reminders and usually a weekly view. I haven't settled on one yet  (I'm the most indecisive person ever, especially for something I'm going to use daily for a whole year!) but I thought I'd share a few with you from Sugar Paper that I've been looking at...

If you've got any suggestions I'd love to know in the comments!

Christmas is definitely the best time for cozying up; the dark nights and cold weather make me want nothing more than to be in my bed binge watching Christmas films. I managed to find this new throw on eBay, I'd seen loads on Etsy but this one was a bargain at only £26.99. Most of them on Etsy are over 100 squids! It's the comfiest thing (the dog definitely thinks so too, she hogs it). I love the texture it gives to the room, I chose the peach colour as we are doing our bedroom out in January and it fits really well with the new colour scheme we've chosen, for now though it still breaks up the neutral colours. Definitely makes me feel very Hygge...

A Prime investment

A Prime investment

18.12.16

Today after braving the metro centre Luke and I took a trip up to Morpeth for a wander round with the dogs; it was a cold & blustery day but I was eager to get out as I've just bought myself a new lens; the Sigma 24mm 1.4 Art Lens, Ive wanted to invest in this for a good two years now and can finally say I have it! My favourite lenses to use are primes, hence the title.. see what I did there?! They're what I mainly use when it comes to my everyday camera (if you're not sure what prime lens means it just means fixed focal length lenses where you can't zoom in or out) - I do have a few zoom lenses but find myself always reverting back to the primes as they give the nice low aperture blurred backgrounds that I love and nothing I shoot (unless traveling) really requires a zoom lens. I opted for the 24mm Sigma as my everyday camera is crop sensor so this lens really shows around 35mm, which is my preferred focal length for most of my photography. Since I bought this lens I've rarely had to go over 500 ISO even at night, it lets in a ton of light! All the photos seem to have no grain, they're really smooth and sharp. I think it will be perfect for my blog photography as I usually shoot indoors where it's low light. It also has infinity focus so I'm looking forward to trying out more night sky photography. Very impressed so far, I think it will be a lens I'll get a lot of use out of.

I'm looking forward to shooting with it properly when I go away on Friday but for now here's some test shots I took...
